Today, the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) held a handover ceremony for essential disaster preparedness equipment.

The equipment included generators, chainsaws and accessories, which have been allocated to Village Councils and key Government departments that support Niue’s community disaster response and preparedness efforts.

The equipment was procured under the Government of Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP). The Grant Contract for this project was signed in February 2023, with the first item procured being a handling forklift for the Alofi Port. The GGP framework is specifically designed to assist NGOs and local public institutions with projects that address urgent community development needs.

Since the establishment of the GGP partnership in 2016, the Embassy of Japan has funded six projects to support community development and safety initiatives as of December 2023. The Office of Foreign Affairs has continued to work closely with the Government of Japan, facilitating discussions on priority needs to ensure that Niue’s communities are better equipped for emergencies.

The Acting Minister for Police and the National Disaster Management Office, Mr. Tofua Puletama acknowledged the importance of the equipment in enhancing Niue’s disaster preparedness. The Minister highlighted that the generators and chainsaws will play a critical role in strengthening local response capacity during emergencies. Appreciation was extended to the Government of Japan for their continued partnership and support, with a call for Village Councils to use the equipment wisely, maintain it properly, and integrate it into their local disaster plans.

The Acting Prime Minister of Niue, Hon. Sonya Talagi also highlighted the collaborative efforts that made this project possible. The Minister acknowledged the Office of Foreign Affairs, the National Disaster Management Office, and all individuals who were instrumental in securing and delivering this vital equipment.

The generators and chainsaws provided will support the Village Councils and essential departments to respond more effectively during emergency situations, such as cyclones, storms, and other natural hazards.
