Niue and the Federal Republic of Germany have formally established diplomatic relations today in Auckland, New Zealand.

The Prime Minister of Niue Hon. Dalton Tagelagi met with the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr. Johann Wadephul, for a bilateral meeting and the signing of the Joint Declaration on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations.

The establishment of diplomatic ties strengthens Niue’s engagement within the international community and creates new opportunities for cooperation with Germany across regional and global platforms. It also supports future partnership on areas of shared priority, including matters important to Niue as a small island developing state.

Prime Minister Tagelagi welcomed the establishment of relations and conveyed Niue’s appreciation for Germany’s recognition of Niue as a sovereign state and its decision to formalise diplomatic ties. “For a small island country like Niue, these moments matter, they strengthen our place in the international community and open the door to new partnerships. This reflects our shared commitment to friendship, cooperation, and mutual respect.”

The Prime Minister also acknowledged Germany’s willingness to support Niue’s engagement at the regional and international levels. He highlighted the importance of such partnerships for small island developing states. “Germany’s support will help ensure Niue’s voice continues to be heard on issues important to us and to our region. Today is not just about formalising a relationship it is about setting the tone for the future, and Niue approaches this partnership with optimism and goodwill,” said Prime Minister Tagelagi.

The Government of Niue looks forward to working constructively with the Federal Republic of Germany as this new chapter of cooperation begins.
