The Department of Health has officially declared an Influenza A outbreak on the island, effective Wednesday 26th March 2025.

This follows the confirmation of 33 cases, with the first case reported on 24th March 2025.

Influenza A is a contagious respiratory illness that affects the nose, throat, and lungs. The virus spreads rapidly through direct contact with infected individuals, touching contaminated surfaces, and airborne droplets from coughing, sneezing, or talking.

Due to the increase in case numbers, the public is strongly urged to immediately adopt precautionary measures similar to those used during the COVID-19 pandemic, to limit further transmission.

The public is advised to minimize social gatherings where necessary, particularly when visiting Niue Foou Hospital. Practice regular hand hygiene using soap and water or hand sanitizer, and maintain physical distance from individuals who are unwell. Additionally, visitation to the hospital ward, aged care unit, and elderly individuals in the community is restricted until further notice to protect those most at risk. The Department of Health thank the public for the collective effort to protect each other and asks for the continued and ongoing support to be kind and adhere to the precautions advice and guidance from the Public Health Division.

“The safety of our people is our highest priority. We urge everyone to act responsibly, follow public health advice, and look out for one another. Together, we can manage this outbreak and protect our families and our island,” said Minister for the Ministry of Social Services, Hon. Sonya Talagi.

By adhering to these recommended health practices, members of the public can help reduce the spread of Influenza A and safeguard the health of our community. The Department of Health will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as necessary.
