The Secretariat Office of the Niue Public Service Commission, in collaboration with the New Zealand High Commission Office in Niue, officially opened the Heavy Machinery and Vehicle Training at the USP Niue Campus.

Funded through the Manaaki New Zealand Vocational Short-Term Training Scholarships, this is the first programme delivered in Niue under the partnership between the Governments of Niue and New Zealand. The programme is facilitated by a New Zealand company AllTrain Ltd with technical support from Skills Group.

The eight-day programme involves 35 local public servants from key Government departments such as the Departments of Transport, Utilities and Environment. The training covers heavy machinery operations, with a focus on building skills, working safely, and improving services to create a safer workforce.

The Acting Minister for the Ministry of Infrastructure, Mr Richie Mautama acknowledged the Government of New Zealand through MFAT, the Secretariat Office, Center of Excellence in IT Niue (CEIT) and the USP Niue Campus, for their collaboration in facilitating and delivering the training.

The Acting Prime Minister of Niue, Hon. Sonya Talagi, highlighted the importance of the initiative, stating “This programme represents an important investment not only in the assets that contribute to Niue’s development, but also in our people ensuring their wellbeing in the workplace and their safe return to their families.”

The programme will continue over the coming days, providing practical engagement to enhance capacity within essential public services and contribute to Niue’s ongoing workforce development.
