The Ministry of Infrastructure hosted a soft launch for the Niue Hanan International Airport (IUE) Perimeter Fence Upgrade on the 10th October 2024. This crucial project, which commenced in June 2023, is led by Mautama Construction, Niue Shop Exports, and GHD NZ Ltd.

The airport perimeter fence upgrade was undertaken to enhance aviation safety at Niue Hanan International Airport and ensure full compliance with New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.

The project was initiated as the current fencing and gates had exceeded their expected lifespan, with significant sections falling short of ICAO compliance. The perimeter fence upgrade aims to address these issues through a full replacement of the existing 6.1 km fence and gates, incorporating modern materials and designs to align with international aviation safety standards.

Key improvements include the installation of new vehicle access gates, including manual swing gates, as well as a primary automated sliding gate for enhanced security and operational efficiency. The project also involves the careful removal and disposal of the old, non-compliant fencing materials. This perimeter fence upgrade will significantly enhance security and operational standards, ensuring a safer environment for travellers and staff at Niue Hanan International Airport.

The Director of Transport, Mr Morgan Mougavalu expressed his appreciation to all key contributors, including the Minister of Infrastructure, the Director of PMCU, and the contractors, for their commitment to delivering exceptional results. Their combined efforts have been crucial in reaching this milestone, ensuring the long-term safety and operational readiness of Niue Hanan International Airport.

The Minister for the Ministry of Infrastructure, Hon. Crossley Tatui acknowledged the collaborative support provided by New Zealand and other partners involved in bringing this important project to fruition.

“We are extremely grateful for the invaluable assistance and funding provided by New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT). This project would not have been possible without the collaborative efforts of MFAT, our Project Management and Coordination Unit (PMCU), the Department of Transport, and all those who have contributed their expertise and dedication to this upgrade. Together, we are enhancing Niue’s aviation infrastructure, improving safety, and supporting Niue’s long-term connectivity.”
