The Pacific Justice Sector Programme (PJSP), based in the Office of the Chief Justice in Wellington, New Zealand, conducted a three-day training workshop for the Commissioners of the Land Division of the High Court in Niue. The training was facilitated by retired Judge Enoka Puni from the 28th to 30th May 2024.

The PJSP programme is funded by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade to support and assist the development of the justice sector in 15 Pacific Island countries, including Niue. This programme continues the legacy of similar initiatives over the past 24 years to enhance judicial expertise through training and support.
At the request and endorsement of the Niue Chief Justice, PJSP's recent workshop focused on improving the judicial expertise and preparedness of the Land Division Commissioners in handling land matters during Court sittings. This initiative is part of PJSP's broader commitment to ensuring the judiciary in Pacific Island countries are well-equipped.

In addition to the workshop, PJSP played a crucial role in assisting the Niue Justice Department by designing a three-year professional development plan for Commissioners and Justices of the Peace (JPs) of the High Court of Niue. This plan was formulated through extensive interviews with justice sector groups and community organizations in Niue over a two-week period with the objective of supporting the improvement and proficiency of the judiciary over the next three years.

The Secretary of Justice, Mr. Darren Tohovaka expressed gratitude to the PJSP team, stating

We deeply appreciate the dedication and expertise of the PJSP team in conducting this valuable training. Their efforts in helping us develop a professional development plan for our judiciary are instrumental in ensuring the continued judicial practices in Niue.
