From 17 to 19 February 2025, Niue will participate in an Implementation Review of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC), reaffirming its commitment to combating corruption at both national and regional levels.

The review will take place at the Fale Fono II, with an expert panel overseeing the review. The panel includes representatives from State Parties Laos and Mauritania, as well as United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Criminal Justice Officers from Austria and a UNODC Regional Anti Corruption Advisor from the Pacific Office.

Following the review, on 20 February 2025, the UNODC will facilitate a specialised workshop focused on developing Niue’s National Anti-Corruption Strategy or Policy. This will be followed by a Civil Society Awareness Dialogue which includes youth, media, and civil society organisations.

The Niue Crown Law Office is leading the initiative, with Solicitor General Mr Justin Kamupala
emphasizing the significance of the review, "Niue continues to reflect its strong commitment to
combating corruption both locally and within our region. We have a positive relationship with the UNODC Pacific, and the participation of UNODC and State Parties from Mauritania and Laos is a testament to our dedication to upholding the UNCAC. This review will provide valuable
recommendations, and Thursday’s workshop will be instrumental in developing a National Anti-
Corruption Strategy or Policy for Niue."

The Prime Minister of Niue, Honourable Dalton Tagelagi opened the three-day review. “The Government of Niue extends its sincerest appreciation to the UNODC Secretariat team for its continued support and facilitation of UNCAC implementation reviews, as well as its engagement with various constructive anti-corruption initiatives, workshops and resources,” said Prime Minister Tagelagi.

The review will focus on preventative measures and asset recovery as part of Niue’s UNCAC Implementation Review. A variety of public service personnel, including representatives from the Prime Minister's Office, Public Service Commission, Ministry of Finance and Planning, Department of Justice, Niue Police, Financial Intelligence Unit, and Office of the Secretary to Government, will actively participate.

The Implementation Review panel members have travelled to Niue to provide insights and recommendations, strengthening Niue’s efforts in transparency, governance, and anti-corruption reforms. As Niue takes this significant step in reviewing and enhancing its anti-corruption framework, we look forward to the valuable outcomes from this workshop.
