The Minister of Home Affairs, Hon. Richie Mautama, is in Suva, Fiji, attending the Pacific Peace and Security Dialogue alongside members of the Niue National Security Committee.
The Dialogue is a Pacific-led forum that brings countries together to address an increasingly complex regional security environment. Discussions focus on shared challenges across the region, including climate change, transnational organised crime, economic pressures, and geopolitical dynamics - often described as a “polycrisis” affecting Pacific communities.
As part of the programme, Minister Mautama participated in a talanoa panel discussion, where he outlined Niue’s approach to security as grounded in the everyday safety and wellbeing of its people. He noted that, for small island states like Niue, the greatest risk is not a single threat, but the combined pressure on fragile systems - particularly when multiple shocks occur at once.
The Minister highlighted key concerns for Niue and the region, including vulnerability to climate change and extreme weather events, limited national capacity to respond to concurrent crises, and growing risks from transnational crime, cyber threats, and external pressures. He also emphasised the importance of safeguarding ocean resources and maintaining national sovereignty.
Minister Mautama stressed that regional unity remains critical in navigating an increasingly complex geopolitical environment. He noted that Pacific countries must continue to work together, remain anchored in shared values, and ensure partnerships deliver practical outcomes that strengthen national capability.
“Security in Niue is about resilience - ensuring our systems are strong, coordinated, and able to absorb shocks while continuing to function for our people,” Minister Mautama said.
Niue values these regional platforms for dialogue, cooperation, and collective problem-solving. Participation in the Dialogue reinforces Niue’s commitment to strengthening national systems, working constructively with partners, and contributing to a unified Blue Pacific approach to peace and security.
