The Government of Niue today commemorates 51 years as a self-governing state in free association with New Zealand.

Constitution Day 2025 is a moment to reflect on past achievements, acknowledge present challenges, and look ahead with unity and purpose. This year’s theme, “Ko e Mafegahala ke he Monuina – At the Crossroad to Prosperity,” reflects the nation’s position at a pivotal moment, a time to make wise decisions, act boldly, and move forward together toward a sustainable and inclusive future.

The Prime Minister of Niue, Honourable Dalton Tagelagi highlighted key progress made over the past year, including strengthened governance, investment in infrastructure, and continued economic resilience. He noted that the Government’s 2025/2026 Budget of NZD 68.1 million reflects its commitment to sustainability, climate readiness, and improving public wellbeing. He acknowledged that behind these achievements are the dedicated efforts of public servants, village leaders, international partners, and everyday Niuean’s who continue to contribute to building a stronger and more resilient nation.

Prime Minister Tagelagi also reaffirmed Niue’s enduring partnerships with New Zealand and other international development partners, including Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea, and other donor partner organisations, whose continued support strengthens the country’s progress and resilience.

“Our constitutional relationship with New Zealand remains a cornerstone of Niue’s journey, built on mutual respect, trust, and shared values,” the Prime Minister said. “We deeply value all our friends and partners who continue to stand with us as we work toward a resilient and prosperous future.

In closing, the Prime Minister reflected on the deeper meaning of the Constitution as a living expression of Niue’s culture, values, and shared identity.

“The Constitution is more than a legal document,” he said. “It lives in the way we speak our Vagahau Niue, in how we live our Tāoga traditions, and in how we treat one another with unity, service, and respect. It is a living promise we uphold every day.”

Niue ke Monuina. Niue ko Kaina. Niue ki Mua.
