The Government of Niue welcomed a delegation from the Guangdong Province and the city of Zhuhai on Friday 19th July 2024. The delegation's visit highlight’s the ongoing partnership between Niue and the People’s Republic of China.

The delegation’s visit was highlighted by participating in the Alofi South Village Show Day on Saturday 20th
July, where Mrs. LIU Yahong, Vice Chairwoman of the Standing Committee of Guangdong Provincial People’s Congress presented 25 LED lights to Alofi South and showcased cultural performances by the Zhuhai Performing Arts Group CO.Ltd. The event provided an opportunity to foster cultural exchange and appreciation between the two communities.

At a handover ceremony at Fale Fono II, Mr. WU Lin, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of Zhuhai Municipal People’s Congress officially handed over 50 elegant wooden chairs to the Niue Government to honour Niue’s upcoming 50th Constitution celebrations.

In her remarks Madam LIU stated “Today, as we depart Niue, our brief short stay has met very fruitful results, we have experienced the enthusiasm of the Niue people and friendly manners. We also appreciate the stunning beauty and delightful delicacies of Niue. The biggest achievement that we have accomplished during our visit is the enhancement of relationship. We wish Niue a great success of the 50th anniversary celebration of self-government.”

During discussions with the Office of the Premier this morning, the Premier of Niue, Hon. Dalton Tagelagi thanked the delegation for their generous contributions and commitment to Niue’s development. In his remarks at the handover ceremony, Premier Tagelagi stated

“The relationship between Niue and China has grown stronger over the years, greatly benefiting Niue. China, our second diplomatic partner since 2007, has been instrumental as we expanded our global partnerships. Our bond has deepened with the collaboration between the village of Alofi South and the cities of Zhuhai and Guangdong. We are sincerely grateful for the continuous support, especially the recent gifts of chairs and LED lights."

During their visit, the delegation also met with the Speaker of the Niue Assembly, Hon. Hima Douglas to discuss potential exchanges and collaborations. They were given a tour of the Niue Assembly Chambers, offering insights into Niue’s legislative processes and fostering mutual understanding. The Zhuhai and Guangdong delegation will conclude their visit and depart Niue today, Monday 22nd July 2024.
