The Government of Niue has approved the issuance of a temporary 12 month Spectrum and Internet Communications Licence to Starlink (SpaceX), following the company’s successful completion of all national regulatory and compliance requirements.

The temporary licence enables Starlink services to operate in Niue for a defined trial period, providing households and communities with additional connectivity options. This is intended to complement existing telecommunications services, particularly in areas where internet access has been limited or where service reliability has been challenging.

At the same time, Telecom Niue Ltd continues to invest in strengthening Niue’s national communications infrastructure. This includes ongoing upgrades to its island wide fibre optic network to expand capacity, improve service quality, and enhance safeguards against cyber and communications security risks. In parallel, Telecom Niue Ltd is deploying two new network sites in Alofi and Tuapa, alongside the continued roll out of additional repeaters to improve coverage and service reliability across the island.

The Government will closely monitor the performance, compliance, and community impact of Starlink services throughout the 12 month licence period. This monitoring and review process will ensure that all operations align with Niue’s regulatory standards, national security considerations, and long term telecommunications development objectives.

The Minister of Infrastructure, Hon. Crossley Tatui says that ‘the Government of Niue remains committed to improving digital access for all residents while safeguarding national interests. This approach ensures that new technologies introduced into Niue’s communications environment operate safely, responsibly, and transparently, and in a manner that supports sustainable national development.
