Last Friday on the 7th June 2024, His Excellency Makoto OSAWA, the esteemed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan presented his Letter of Credentials to the Premier of Niue, Hon. Dalton Tagelagi.

This occasion strengthens the ties between Japan and Niue and convey the desire to further promote the friendly relations and goodwill that exist between Japan & Niue. As conveyed through the Ambassador from his Majesty the Emperor of Japan.

Ambassador OSAWA is the second High Commissioner from New Zealand to present his letter of credentials to Premier Tagelagi. The Ambassador had the honour of presenting the Letter of Recall from his predecessor His Excellency Mr ITO, Koichi.

Although the visit was a short one, the Ambassador had the opportunity to conduct a series of meetings with Minister Ainuu and Temporary Minister for Social Services Mrs Maureen Vilitama Melekitama. These engagements reflect the importance of fostering relationships not only within the Pacific but also with key international partners.

Ambassador Makoto OSAWA has had extensive experience in the Agriculture, Foresty & Fisheries Ministry as well Environment and International Affairs.

“Japan and Niue are important partners connected by the Pacific Ocean, and we have enjoyed a friendly relationship since the establishment of diplomatic relations between our two countries in 2015. I am extremely honoured to be accredited as Ambassador of Japan to Niue at such a significant time, especially in the year Niue celebrates its Constitution’s 50th Anniversary. I am determined to further strengthen our relationship” said Ambassador Makoto OSAWA.

We are honoured to welcome His Excellency Makoto OSAWA, the esteemed Ambassador of Japan, on his first visit to Niue. We are committed to continuing our relationship with Japan and I look forward to attending PALM10 in July for further dialogue
